For the last few weeks, I’ve been working my friend Pete’s Seedling farm stand at the Chicago Green City Market so I haven’t had much time to shop for myself. This weekend, I made sure to hit a few vendors early and quickly stock up on a few things. Right now, the markets are full of beautiful gorgeous things. Since I had to be quick about it, I adopted a speedy hit-and-run approach as I darted from table to table. (more…)

I love sour cherries. Seriously, next to fresh peaches they are the best thing on earth. You have to move quickly – they’re only around in farmers markets for about 2-3 weeks in mid-late July. (more…)

OK, technically it was at the market Saturday but semantics schmantics, I say. I was busy this weekend and this is the first chance I’ve had to update on my finds that were too fabulous not to share. I think it’s well established that I dig a good farmer’s market and this weekend was fantastic! The weather here in Chicago was finally … decent. Nothing like summer appearing for the first time in JULY. Good god this is trying my patience.

Deep deep in my heart, I think I’m really a farmer. Growing and making things with my hands is so deeply satisfying I can’t quite explain it. Blueberries. Pink swiss chard. Heirloom tomatoes. Squash blossoms. Mint & rosemary. Sprouts. An excellent haul from The Green City Market this morning.
In general, I like to get to farmers markets early – before the sweaty heat sets in, finding parking isn’t an all-out battle and most especially before the dog-and-stroller brigade descends upon the tiny stalls. I get particularly annoyed at that last one. I like room to wander at my leisure, which is why I’m usually roaming the market first thing.

Last week, I took some time to visit with friends and family in San Diego. It was such a treat to leave cold and rainy Chicago for sunny and (sort of) warm SD. Only problem is that I always kind of space out while packing. I think BEACH BEACH BEACH and completely forget that it gets a bit chilly. I never pack appropriately. What a dope.
